I probably get 2 or 3 emails a week from students asking for internships or for advice about getting in the field.
I have noticed that people enter interior design for a variety of reasons -- maybe they want a creative professional pursuit, or they love fabric, or decorating their own homes, or maybe they are inspired by magazines and design television.
It's a great business. I love what I do. I love working for myself and I get great satisfaction watching the process of transforming space for my clients in a way that brings joy to their lives.
To have success in the field, it's not enough to have impeccable taste, have great design skills and decide you want to make other people’s houses pretty.
You actually need the skill set to run a business if you’re going to satisfy your clients. I spoke to some students this week at the Boston Architectural Center, about running a design firm. My main point was: business first.
