Too large of a pattern can easily overpower a small room, so if your patterns are very large, you'll need some distance to appreciate them. The height of the ceilings, how much light the room gets and the openings into the room also play a role.
General rules of thumb--
• Small room, small scale repeats.
• Medium room, medium sized repeats as in this Colefax design.
• A large room is a good choice for large scale repeats with distinct motifs. You need some space from the flowers to appreciate them. For a bold statement, nothing beats Designer's Guild.
