Here's a misconception about what all designers do. Some people feel that designers have a vision and they don’t let go of that vision for clients — it has to be one way. Some designers will come into your house and say that you don’t get to keep anything you have, and they offer one signature style or look. They do a wonderful business and they provide a wonderful service. Most of these designers do good work.
That’s not the business I happen to be in. When you work that way, as a designer you have a lot of control because you don’t have to deal with the grandmother’s piece that doesn’t fit in the house.
There are the technical aspects that I hold onto, such as making sure all the furniture is the right size for the space and the styles all speak to each other, but the rest is really about my customer and their taste.
