Yesterday the Boston Globe Magazine had a cover entitled Your Green Home. One story was about a renovated triple decker using LEED Certified techniques. Another was an architect designed home built into a mountain that is space age in feel. Lastly, there was a piece about a home in Newburyport.
But those homes by and large are not the types of homes that most people live in (although wouldn't it be great if they did). For the rest of us, there was an interesting piece by By Priya Giri Desai called Is It Worth It?. She offers tips for making greener decisions. For example, if replacing windows, Desai notes, "The EPA estimates that replacing old-fashioned single-pane windows can save a homeowner as much as $450 per year in New England. Energy Star windows cost about 15 percent more upfront, says Vargas, but there’s a federal tax credit available, too, worth up to $200."
Desai shares a great new resource in Boston called the Nexus Green Building Resource Center (web site not yet live), which just opened in Boston run by The Green Roundtable, an independent nonprofit organization with a mission to mainstream green building. I am going to check that out!
