On occasion a client calls and says: Will you help me furnish my house from a chain retail store.
What I’ll do for that client is space planning and then I’ll make them a laundry list: “Your sofa should be this big, your chairs should be this big, your coffee table should be this big, you need this many lamps in these places,” and before they buy everything, I’ll review all their choices to make sure that they’re not combining things in an odd way. For example, in a low-ceilinged house, they’re not putting in chairs with a 42” back height, which would make you feel cramped and uncomfortable.
So a series of consultations helps you avoid making expensive mistakes. And more than pays for itself.
When I do full-service decorating, with few exceptions, we buy custom with a few retail items here and there. But not much retail upholstery.
