Why are some fabrics so expensive? I get this questions a lot.
Some of the costs have to do with where the vendor is, what their production cycles are, and their exclusivity. But by and large, more expensive fabrics cost more to produce. They materials are of a higher quality, the printing more detailed, or the weaving more extensive. With few exceptions, at $150 a yard, fabric is more beautiful than at $50 a yard. There’s just no question about it, and when you compare the two next to each other you can see it and you can feel it.
A really beautiful French or English print might have 12 colors in the pattern and a very fine cotton with high thread count. The pattern is crisp and clear and detailed. That’s expensive to manufacture.
A knock-off of the same fabric with less expensive materials and manufacturing might have 6 colors and a chunkier weave to the fabric. The pattern might be the same, but the image is not as detailed and the fabric heavier, with less drape and an obvious weave.
